Vale Tim Bowden

Tim Bowden died peacefully in his sleep on September 1, 2024. He was 87 years of age and had filled every year of that rich life. In addition to being an ABC identity and prominent author, Tim was a much valued contributor to the Outback Travel Australia website.

Tim and his late wife, Roz, shared our love of older, traditional bush-travel vehicles: theirs being Penelope, an 80 Series LandCruiser wagon and ours, Harry, a 75 Series tray-back. We shared many modification and maintenance tips for these trusty bush steeds.

The Bowdens also shared our love of the outback and, like us, spent much of their leisure time in the bush. But Tim’s travel and life experience was much wider than that. A foursome at the Bowdens, or our place, was inevitably spiced with the odd glass of red wine and endless travel experiences.

Every year the Bowdens shared their ‘Xmas Grittings’ newsletter that was always highly entertaining. We’re going to miss your humour and witty commentaries on human follies, Tim.

Roz became progressively unwell in recent years and eventually went into aged care, before she passed away in February 2023. Tim soldiered on, with ample family and long-term friendship support and was continually working on literary projects.

OTA website visitors can check out some of the Bowdens’ experiences here and also Tim’s report on a memorable Arnhem Land visit.
