BUSH POETRY: VERNA'S SLOW-COOKED SCONES
On Fraser Island (now K'gari) firewood was a scarce commodity.

The late David Hosking was OTA’s sales manager for many years and joined the team on several bush trips. He was’t impressed with the firewood supply that compromised Verna McKenzie’s camp oven scones.

WHAT’S…WRONG…WITH…THESE…SCONES??

by David Hosking, 2003.

The gooey mixture looked suspicious,

But we were assured it would be delicious.

So we climbed the hill to Allan’s campsite,

To enjoy this culinary delight!

As we relaxed by the struggling fire,

Our little taste buds burst with desire,

To sample the scones that Verna had made,

But sadly this was to be delayed.

Eventually the reshaped mixture was in the oven.

We won’t starve, there’s about three dozen!

They should cook in thirty minutes, Verna said!

But alas they took two hours instead!

The moral of this story is:

If you want scones in time, just like you should.

Make sure you have the right BLOODY WOOD!
