CAMPING - CAMPER TRAILERS
The Ultimate approach to camper trailer design was unique and the brand had a loyal band of followers, before the company was placed in liquidation in October 2018. The OTA Team has put one through a long-term evaluation.
Ultimate Campers have a unique ‘upside down boat’ design that’s immediately recognisable. The shape is wind-cheating and ground clearance is among the best in class.
Our evaluation unit is an Xplor version that was purchased by two of our long-standing team testers, Michelle and Andy Parry.
This couple has extensive bush-travel experience, having completed a six-month around-Australia jaunt two years ago. The Parrys have since embarked on many demanding bush trips, to spend more leisure time in the places they liked and to check out new destinations.
The camper they chose had to offer caravan-like interior room when set up, with good ventilation and shade for extended live-aboard periods. It also needed
maximum off-road ability, to follow wherever their diff-locked 200 Series ‘Cruiser can go.
The Parrys looked at everything in the market and decided on an optioned-up Ultimate Xplor.
The Xplor interior features a king-size high-density foam mattress, L-shaped lounge with luxury cushions, benchtop and table, galley storage drawers, internal two-burner LPG cooktop, stainless steel sink, LED galley light and 110-litre compressor fridge/freezer.
The electrical system consists of two 110AH AGM deep-cycle batteries, a CTEK 15-amp charger, Redarc 1225LV DC-DC charger, six 12-volt outlets, boot light, LED reverse/spot light, electric water pump and electric brakes.
Storage includes a 110-litre water tank with gauge, 1340-litre nose cone storage, two jerry can holders and a 3.8kg LPG bottle.
Wheels are 16-inch steel rims, shod with All-Terrain tyres.
The high-quality canvas tent has an inbuilt tropical roof and full-length front and mini awnings.
The Parrys incorporated options, including a black bench top and table, gas hot water and room heater, and twin gas bottles.
Tare weight of the Ultimate Xplor is a claimed 850kg and unladen ball weight is a sensible 45kg.
Bodywork is gelcoat-finished fibreglass, mounted on a high-tensile dura-gal chassis and the suspension is independent trailing arm, with Lovell long travel coil springs and Koni adjustable shock absorbers. The coupling is a simple, reliable Treg 360-degree rubber block.
