CAMPING - CAMPER TRAILERS
The Expedition model is Camel Camper’s top product and is one of the best soft-floor camper trailers in the market. The trailer is Australian-made in Brisbane and comes with a leading five-year warranty.
The Bushman Expedition is a proper off-road camper trailer and we’re very impressed with its equipment levels and the simplicity of its design.
We’ve towed independently-sprung and leaf-sprung campers on and off road and although an indepndent setup has its advantages there’s something about the supposedly ‘old fashioned’ leaf spring and beam axle dsign that appeals to us. Bush repairs are much easier, for a start, and there’s no need for shock absorbers that can be troublesome.
We also like the design that features a full-length chassis from the back of the trailer to the hitch, made from 75mm x 50mm x 3mm galvanised Duragal steel.
The Bushman Expedition uses quality, heavy duty AL-KO Outback seven-leaf springs, with rebound leaves, heavy duty hangers and greaseable pins. The axle is an AL-KO 50mm solid beam, made from Australian steel and the brakes are AL-KO 10-inch electric drums with handbrake included. Wheels are aluminium 16-inch, shod with brand new tyres.
The Expedition is a lightweight camper with a gross mass of only 1500kg, so it doesn’t need a large wagon or ute to tow it. The standard coupling is AL-KO’s full-articulation, off-road ball hitch.
The Expedition comes with an extended, three-metre tent made from Australian made Dynaproofed
canvas, plus a 2.5-metre awning with gable (a choice of 12 colour combinations available).
There’s a captive thermal fly covering the main roof, to provide insulation and roof protection and gas strut assistance for easier opening and closing of the main tent.
Camel’s Supreme-grade kitchen is fitted, with a stainless steel bench; recessed stainless steel sink with 12V and mains-pressure supply to a mixer tap; quality Smez four-burner cooker, with three gas and one 240V burners; gas grill; storage drawers and shelf. There’s a fridge slide, two 65-litre water tanks and two 4.5kg gas bottle holders.
Electrical equipment includes a 240V / 12V HD power-management system, incorporating low
voltage converter, dual 80A/H deep-cycle batteries, 240V charger, 240V isolator, fuse box, USB charge port and lighting and 12V sockets throughout the trailer. There’s an internal LED light pack and there are LED taillights.
The Expedition has a welded stoneguard with heavy duty mesh; welded dual recovery points and a tonneau made from high-grade 680gsm PVC with zips and velcro. The toolbox is profiled and comes with integrated pole holder, quality compression locks and keys, lighting, sealed seams and dust seals.
The four stabilising legs are premium AL-KO heavy duty adjustable, with wind-up handle.
