BUYERS GUIDE - SOFT-ROADERS
The seven-seat New Age XUV500 is available with on-demand AWD and a six-speed manual transmission. Auto models were released in May 2016.
The pricing of the Mahindra softroader at launch was $32,900 driveway, which attracted plenty of interest.
Although it was a softroader, with no low-range gearing, that was a low asking price for a seven-seater that’ was well equipped: McPherson struts up front and an independent multilink suspension at the back; cornering headlamps; fog lamps; 17-inch aluminium wheels; touchscreen infotainment system with navigation; black leather seats; reverse camera with dynamic assist; automatic temperature control; tyre pressure and temperature monitoring; smart wipers and headlights; cruise control; six airbags; electronic stability program with rollover mitigation; hill hold and hill descent control and ABS with electronic brake force distribution.
Beneath the bonnet of the New Age XUV500 was an upgraded version of the Mahinda ute’s turbocharged 2.2-litre 103kW (140bhp) m-Hawk diesel engine with 330Nm of torque.
The injection system had a stop-start feature. Claimed fuel consumption was a claimed 6.7 litres per 100 km and the fuel tank capacity was 74 litres.
An Aisin six-speed auto was added in mid-2016.
After three years of persistent requests we finally gave up on getting a Mahindra road test vehicle, so we can’t tell you anything else about it.
