Unimogs for the SES

The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) has taken delivery of three Mercedes-Benz  Unimog emergency response vehicles.

The SES Unimogs will be used by its volunteers in a wide range of flood operations including flood rescues, evacuations, medical transports and logistics support for isolated communities.

Importantly, given recent flood events, the Unimog has a wading depth of 1200mm.

The Unimogs can also be used to deliver fodder to isolated livestock and assist in bush search and rescue operations.

Like all its predecessors the current Unimog U4023 features ‘drop-box’ portal axles that provide increased clearance beneath the vehicle.

The 365/85 20-inch tyres have a central inflation system that allows the driver to drop pressures to aid low speed traction. There are independent coil springs on each corner for extreme articulation over uneven terrain, plus front and rear differential locks.

Low-range mode provides 16 forward gears and 14 reverse gears, but the transmission can be operated in full-automatic mode. The driver can also use a fold-out clutch pedal that assists at low-speed in slippery conditions.

The SES units have been fitted with standard trays in order to get them into service as soon as possible, but crane and flood rescue modules, with inflatable rescue boats are being planned for these units.
