Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series gets AdBlue as part of 2026 update

Toyota’s legendary LandCruiser 70-Series is the latest off-roader to adopt AdBlue as part of its artillery to clean exhaust gases.

While nobody who orders a LandCruiser 70-Series has ever put AdBlue on their wishlist, Toyota has finally added the fuel additive that reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the exhaust.

AdBlue is not a feature. It’s not a selling point – in fact if anything it’s a negative for those simply wanting a rugged workhorse.

Instead, it’s all about regulatory compliance.

Toyota has confirmed the addition of a 20-litre AdBlue tank across the 70-Series range, a move driven entirely by the need to meet Euro VI emissions standards (the truck equivalent of Euro 6 standards).

The selective catalytic reduction system injects urea into the exhaust stream to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions – the kind of invisible-to-the-driver chemistry that regulators demand and buyers largely ignore until the warning light comes on.

And don’t go thinking you can simply let the tank run dry or fill it with an alternative liquid; to meet the regulations the car engine must shut down if there is no AdBlue to clean those emissions.

Of course, 70-Series buyers will by no means be alone in dealing with AdBlue.

AdBlue is increasingly standard fitment on diesel engines.

And while some serious 4x4s and working utes have managed to dodge what many see as an impost, it’s becoming more common as manufacturers work to satisfy tightening emissions rules.

The 70-Series’ closest rival, the Ford Ranger Super Duty, runs AdBlue too.

So while it might sting a little for purists, it’s the new reality for diesel-powered off-roaders that want to remain street-legal.

Power figures remain unchanged: 150kW and 500Nm from the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel in automatic guise, the same drivetrain that also features in the Prado, Hilux and Hiace.

The AdBlue filler sits above the front left guard on the 76-, 78-, and 79-Series double cab-chassis.

Single-cab models have the AdBlue refueller positioned between the cab and rear wheels.

There is one notable trade-off for 78 Series Troop Carrier buyers: fuel tank capacity drops from 180 litres to 130 litres to bring it in line with other variants in the range.

That’s a significant cut for a vehicle whose owners have long valued its impressive range between fuel stops – although aftermarket suppliers have plenty of options to increase fuel capacity.

At the same time, Toyota has also reopened order books for automatic variants of the 70 Series – the 76 wagon, 78 Troopcarrier, and 79 pick-ups (in single- and dual-cab guises) – after a production pause in 2025 aimed at managing supply expectations.

It comes as the 70-Series posted a lacklustre June sales result of just 146 vehicles.

Expect those numbers to pick up in the second half of 2026 as supply frees up.

However, the five-speed manual that until recently was the only option for the 70-Series is still not available to order.
