Outback Travel Australia was invited to attend a major gathering of Earthcruiser motorhome owners in April 2025 at the Broken Hill Racecourse camping area. We had a great time discussing their travel experiences and inspecting some of their vehicles.

Most people who invest in rather expensive motorhomes remain on hard-top surfaces and consider themselves adventurous if they attempt gravel roads or modest fire trails. The Earthcruiser fraternity isn’t like that.

Many of these Earthcruiser-mounted bush adventurers have plenty of remote-area travel background and have opted for a bit more self-sufficiency, luxury and performance than they had in prior times, tenting or towing camper trailers. Others are ‘newbies’ to outback travel and enjoyed learning from more experienced trippers.

At OTA we have no doubt that Earhcruiser leads the pack of 4×4 motorhome builders in this country, featuring bush-practical design layouts, sturdy build quality, among the most advanced electrical and battery systems, and almost unbelievable after-sales support. The owners we spoke to assured us that every problem they’ve experienced has been addressed, regardless of the age of their Earthcruiser.

“It’s like a family feeling,” one owner told us. “We’ve rung on the satphone after hours, seeking guidance and the response from Earthcruiser principals Mark and Susan Fawcett has always been immediate and helpful.”

The attendance numbers at the Broken Hill get-together were impressive, with some 35 vehicles lined up in the excellent Racecourse camping area. However, there would have been several more, if not for the massive flooding in Queensland’s Channel Country that marooned them north of Cooper Creek.

Earthcruiser’s well designed and well built ‘go-most-places’ machines appeal to buyers who want to visit the remote places in the Australian Outback. The fact that some models are designed to fit into ISO containers also means that many of them have ventured overseas.

At the Broken Hill event, Earthcruiser owners shared their travel history and discussed common issues, including insurance matters and the tricky bureaucratic processes involved with international travel.

The Earthcruiser model that’s particularly suited to overseas adventures is based on the legendary Mercedes-Benz Unimog ‘U’ model that features VarioPilot steering. The steering column and pedal assembly can slide from RHD to LHD in around 30 seconds!

There were three of these models at the Broken Hill event, where Earthcruiser received an order for another new one to be built this year.

We’ve been keen followers of Earthcruiser motorhome initiatives since the early days, back in 2009. These first examples were built mainly on Fuso cab/chassis and it was interesting to see several of these early models at the Broken Hill gathering.

The arrival of the capable and smoother-riding Iveco Daily 4×4 in 2012 provided Earthcruiser with an ideal cab/chassis for its mid-range lineup and the bulk of the owner fleet at Broken Hill was Iveco-mounted.

Next in number were iterations of Earthcruiser motorhome modules on LandCruiser 70 Series and Mercedes-Benz G-wagon cab/chassis, led by the sensational Extreme 6×6 model.
