Four-fifths of Queensland’s  RV owners would change their road-safety behaviour, if they had access to education, claimed Jason Plant, CEO of Caravan Trade and Industries Association Queensland.

“The Caravan and Trade Industries Association Queensland (CTIAQ) is greatly encouraged by the Queensland Government’s announcement of its Transport and Main Roads Budget for 2025-26, to improve road connectivity across our communities,” said Mr Plant. 

“We believe the new budget is a fresh start and will make a significant difference for our roads and infrastructure.”

The CTIAQ believes the Safer Roads, Better Transport Plan is a landmark commitment to safer road use in Queensland. The broad areas for attention outlined by Minister Brent Mickelberg, aligns with the priorities CTIAQ members have identified as a key focus.

“That said, with 302 accidents recorded in 2024 and 80-percent of Queensland RV owners willing to change their road safety behaviour if they had access to education, it would be impactful for a road safety program to be addressed as a critical component of the Plan,” said Jason Plant. 

“The CTIAQ strongly urges supporting subsidised towing courses and education programs to be included as part of the Plan’s key initiatives.”

VANSafe

Road safety education is a key priority for CTIAQ and its members. Their mission is to work toward eliminating accidents involving recreational vehicles, including caravans, by 2026.

In 2023, CTIAQ in partnership with the Queensland Government StreetSmarts Program, launched and rolled out a free of charge, state-wide program called VANSafe that was open to all RV owners and was designed to increase driver understanding and education on best practices to avoid accidents.

VANSafe was implemented in 13 different locations and the program was deemed highly successful with every inspection and masterclass booked out, and attracting over 2617 attendees.

“CTIAQ funds limited VANSafe programs, but this is not enough to reduce accidents on our roads, whether they are new or require maintenance,” said Jason Plant. 

“We strongly urge support from the Minister to ensure that caravan enthusiasts have access to vital programs to ensure they can continue their road tripping adventures safely, compliantly and with confidence.”
