100 Things To See In The Kimberley
Book review by Allan Whiting:
100 Things To See In The Kimberley by local tour guide Scotty Connell
At Outback Travel Australia we know The Kimberley region very well, but, as it turns out, not as well as Kimberley Spirit Tours proprietor, Scotty Connell. This bloke was born and raised in The Kimberley and understudied local legend, the late Malcolm Douglas.
From his early years Scotty spent his time exploring this amazing area and worked with various tour operators and indigenous communities before starting his own tour business.
His recently published book, 100 Things To See In The Kimberley, is a comprehensive list of the principal attractions in the greater Kimberley region and that makes it unusual, because most tour operators keep their cards close to their chests, not sharing sites for people to explore on their own.
We thought we’d visited most of The Kimberley attractions, but Scotty’s book showed us a few that we haven’t seen. Guess we’ll have to go back at least once more and, next time, we’ll link up with Scotty Connell!
The format of Scotty’s book is unusual, in that it’s not a collection of different travel itineraries. Instead, it lists and illustrates with brilliant photography the principal points of interest in what is a very large area of North Western Australia, letting readers pick and choose what they find most most interesting.
Making that itinerary building task easier are reference maps with highlighted sites numbered for easy reference.
We’d recommend 100 Things To See In The Kimberley to anyone planning a visit to the ruggedly beautiful North West. Our review copy has pride of place on our office bookshelf.
