LOWER COST SAT COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE
A 2025 alternative to the traditional satphone.

Human Mobile Devices entered Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) communications with the launch of HMD OffGrid hand-held device. This cutting-edge 2025 technology was aimed at the gap between cellular and satellite networks.

As travelling Aussies known only too well, around 70 percent of the Earth’s landmass remains outside the reach of mobile networks. HMD chose Australia as one of the first countries in which it launched the OffGrid system, in February 2025.

The HMD OffGrid delivers satellite connectivity and features 24/7 emergency response, three-day battery life and MIL-STD-810H military grade-durability.

The device weighs a mere 60 grams and fits in the palm of a hand. It’s design includes an integrated loop that allows easy connection to a carry strap.

HMD OffGrid uses the L Band satellite radio spectrum, enabling an Android or IOS user to connect directly to satellites, even in the world’s most challenging environments. L Band waves are used for GPS units because they are able to penetrate clouds, fog, rain, storms and vegetation. Only dense environments such as heavy forest canopies or concrete buildings can cause L Band units to receive data inaccurately.

The OffGrid app enables two-way messaging and live location tracking for up to five recipients. It also has a ‘check in’ feature, sending a pre-configured message to recipients with just a click of a dedicated button.

HMD OffGrid also comes with Overwatch x Rescue, a premium SOS service by FocusPoint International that includes 24/7 multi-lingual emergency response coordination and fully-funded assistance for off-the-grid customers.

The device was launched via Amazon for A$329 and with a choice of two operating plans:

The HMD Unlimited Plan was priced at A$24.99 monthly, or A$239.99 annually, for unlimited messages and check-in, and SOS services (following a one-time activation fee of A$13.99). Optional live tracking added A$6.99 per month.

The HMD Freedom Plan was priced at  a once-yearly payment of A$112.99, allowing 350 text messages and unlimited check-ins. Live tracking was also included, following a one-time activation fee of A$27.99.

The set-up of HMD OffGrid was said to be quick and simple. Upon receiving the device, buyers use a QR code to activate their subscription plan and get started.

OTA will check out an HMD OffGrid device during an outback trip in May 2025.
