4WD MODIFICATIONS - COMMUNICATIONS & NAVIGATION
Uniden’s new UH600 radio series are claimed to be built for Australia’s rugged conditions, offering high grade performance in a lightweight, compact design. The new 80-channel UHF radios are available in 1-Watt, 1.5-Watt and 2-Watt power settings.
Uniden says the UH620 series can communicate at a 13km+ range.
Uniden says users can enjoy up to 20 hours talk time before recharging, via a convenient micro-USB port and the included rechargeable batteries. Each radio has auto battery saving mode and low-battery alert.
A great feature is a Shared Channel Quiet Filter that ensures the radio stays quiet when sharing a busy channel, only allowing transmissions from radios using the same code – perfect for kids and families.
Other features include a large backlit channel display, headset jack, duplex capability and Auto Squelch that blocks background noise.
Carabiner and belt clips allow users to clip the radio to clothing or backpacks.
Pricing at launch ranged from $60 to $80 and twin packs were available.
Uniden lent us a twin pack 2W pair to test and we checked out the UH620’s distance ability against a 5W hand-held and our vehicle-installed GME CB with one-metre-tall aerial.
As expected, the Uniden UH620 lost signal before the installed CB and external aerial combination, but the surprise was range not far short of the 5W hand-held unit’s. In hilly terrain the installed radio had signal out to around 12km; the 5W hand-held, around 8km and the UH620, around 7km.
Voice quality out of the UH620 was excellent and it exhibited no unwanted noise.
For people who want a compact, easily carried CB radio the Uniden UH620 is hard to beat.
